What Never Stays
LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2026
Every act of creation produces more than a finished work. It also leaves structures, processes, relationships, traces of labour, periods of waiting, material experiments and memories. Residual: What Never Stays turns attention towards these temporary but necessary conditions—the elements that allow something else to happen, yet are rarely recognised as part of the work itself.
Bringing together art, design and material-aware practices, the exhibition asks:
THE CONDITIONS OF MAKING
Here, residual does not mean waste. It describes the traces left by relationships, processes and acts of making. Some remain visible; others appear to disappear once their role has been fulfilled, while continuing to exist within the work.
What if the most important part of an artwork is the part that never gets exhibited?
